As the Issues and Communications Coordinator, you will be accountable for identifying, monitoring, and analyzing news reports of relevance to Supply Ontario programs and issues. Preparing media monitoring packages for use by staff at Supply Ontario. Determining top and emerging issues and tracking accordingly. Providing analysis of media coverage on selected announcements and issues. Providing support to the communications team as needed on a number of projects.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Daily media and website monitoring including local, provincial, regional, national and trade media to anticipate and identify emerging issues, trends and policies with potential implications for the organization.
- Analyze news coverage and identify relevant trends, narratives and opportunities or risks for the Agency.
- Choosing news items of interest and relevance to the Agency for inclusion in daily electronic media scans, to support the issues management process and media analysis. Organize articles for media scan so that significant stories are prominently positioned. Flag contentious media items to the Director, Communications.
- Utilizing current trends in media monitoring and social listening to gain insight into the procurement and supply chain landscape in Ontario and beyond.
- Identifying top and emerging issues and create a mechanism for tracking and monitoring.
- Identifying search criteria in order to obtain stories of interest and relevance to the Agency Reviewing key search word database periodically to ensure current programs and contentious issues are being included in media scan(s).
- Reviewing social media feeds (e.g., X, Facebook, LinkedIn) and other social media sites to track relevant conversations and emerging stories for related issues/topics. Flag contentious items to the Director, Communications
- Liaising with media monitoring vendors as needed.
- Conducting qualitative media analysis on selected announcements and/or trending issues and media/stories events. Prepare reports that analyze media coverage in terms of volume, source, tone, tenor, and geographic scope.
- The work is performed within established procedures and processes but requires a high degree of independence. Job requires incumbent to report to work at 8:00 am daily to commence media monitoring. Position also requires some weekend work in order to monitor Saturday/Sunday media.
- Problem solving skills required in the event of technical difficulties or other unexpected circumstances.
- Providing support to Communications Advisor as well as Senior Communications Advisors as needed.
- Other related duties as required.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
- Degree or diploma in journalism or public relations.
- 1-2 years of communications or media experience.
- Experience with media monitoring platform / tools, issues tracking, and communications.
- Knowledge of agency programs and issues to determine news stories relevant to operations and the ministry, judgement to determine relative significance to the ministry of news items.
- An understanding of news cycles, including print, digital, and social media outlets, covering the Agency, activities of provincial ministries, and relevant stakeholders, to identify and analyze emerging issues and trends.
- An understanding of journalism and current event trends.
- Written communication skills required to prepare media analysis summaries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into concise summaries to a variety of audiences.
- High level of political acuity and understanding of contentious issues.
- Understanding of the government decision-making process and protocols as well as policy development and processes.
- High level of customer service skills and interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with all Agency employees.
- Highly proficient with computer related software packages (e.g., Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer) to prepare media scans/reports and other documents, as well as to research information on the Internet, intranet, and other databases.
- Well established knowledge of social media platforms and monitoring tools and the ability to access and monitor them for Agency related issues.
- Initiative, ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Proven ability to balance competing priorities and meet strict deadlines.

This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement; at the time of posting, this position would require in-office presence 3 days per week, based on current operational requirements.
